Condition guide · spinal muscular atrophy

SMA (spinal muscular atrophy): find a neuromuscular team with real SMA experience.

SMA care has changed fast, and not every clinic offers every option. We find the neuromuscular centers near you that follow SMA patients — for a child or an adult — each checked on their current hospital or university page (and we tell you when a site couldn't be checked), and tell you exactly who to call and what to ask.

Check if we can help — $149 only after we confirm

Why the right team matters with SMA

SMA is lifelong. The team you pick now handles treatment access, therapy and breathing care — often for years.

What your SMA report contains

A plain-English PDF built for one family — not a list of 200 names.

SMA care, in plain words

How SMA care is usually organized — neuromuscular neurologist, pulmonary, physical and occupational therapy, nutrition, orthopedics — so appointments make sense from the first visit.

2–3 SMA-experienced centers, verified

Neuromuscular programs that follow SMA patients of your age — Cure SMA network sites, MDA Care Centers or others — each checked on the hospital's or university's own page within days of your report (we tell you if a site couldn't be checked). Plus the closest option to home.

Treatment access, mapped

Which approved SMA therapies each center publicly lists, and the practical steps: referrals, insurance approval, travel. We list the options; you and your doctors decide.

Clinical trials near you

SMA trials recruiting now within reach of your state, with the contact person and what to ask.

Exactly who to call

Phone numbers, new-patient forms, referral rules, how to send genetic test results and records, and a ready-to-send email plus a 30-second phone script.

Questions to ask

"How many SMA patients do you follow?", "Do you see adults?", "Who coordinates breathing and therapy care?" — plus a one-page visit summary and patient-community resources.

Our rare-condition sample is for Castleman disease (fictional patient; the specialists, programs and links are real and were checked on the report date). An SMA report follows the same structure.

Who we are

WhichSpecialist is an independent research service run by Utku Güneysu (sole proprietorship) in Istanbul, Türkiye. We are not doctors and we never give medical advice — our job is to find the doctors who can.

Every specialist, phone number and link in your report is checked by hand, one by one, on the hospital's or university's own page. AI helps us search US sources first (hospital pages, published research, public data). No doctor, hospital or company pays us. Every email is read and answered by a person.

Questions

Is this medical advice?

No. We help you find and talk to the right specialists. We don't identify or confirm any condition and we don't recommend treatments — those decisions belong to you and your doctors.

Cure SMA and MDA already have free center maps. Why would I pay for this?

Cure SMA's treatment-center finder and MDA's Care Center list are great free places to start, and we point you to them. What we add: we check that each specialist is still at that center and sees SMA patients of your age, find trials near you, and give you the exact phone numbers, referral rules, email and questions for your state.

Can you help if the patient is an adult?

Yes. Choose "Me" or "Someone else" in the form. Adults with SMA — and teens moving to adult care — often need a different clinic than children do, and we look for adult neuromuscular programs that follow SMA.

Do you need medical records?

No. "Spinal muscular atrophy", the patient's age group and your state are enough to start. If a detail matters — for example a treatment already started — we'll ask by email. Please don't send records.

Do doctors or hospitals pay to be listed?

Never. No doctor, hospital or company pays us, and we take no referral fees. You are our only customer.
